How to prepare for your first consultation with a lawyer
Topic: Practical guide
Which documents to bring, which questions to ask, and how to get the most out of your first appointment.
The first consultation lets the lawyer understand your situation, and lets you understand your options. Good preparation saves you time and money. Write down the timeline Before the appointment, note what happened in order: dates, the people involved, and what you have already done. The lawyer will grasp your case much faster. Gather your documents Signed contracts and agreements. Correspondence: letters, text messages, emails. Any official document, judgment or summons you received, with the date you received it. Invoices, receipts and statements if the dispute is about money. Bring copies and keep the originals. Watch the deadlines Some steps must be taken within short deadlines, such as challenging a judgment. Some of these deadlines run from the date you are notified of the judgment, others from the day it is handed down, for example a criminal judgment given in your presence. If you receive a judgment or a summons, or a judgment is given in your case, contact a lawyer without delay and tell them the date. Prepare your questions What are my chances, and what are the risks? Is an amicable settlement possible before going to court? How long could the procedure take? What fees and costs should I expect? Be transparent Even facts that don't work in your favour should be mentioned: your lawyer is bound by professional secrecy and can only defend you well if they know everything. This article gives general information and does not replace advice from a lawyer who looks at your own situation.
